Saint-Exupéry wrote while in a self-imposed exile in the United States during World War II. His friend Annabella decided to read him a story-"The Little Mermaid"-that got Saint-Exupéry thinking about writing a fairy tale of his own. In the early 1940s, Saint-Exupéry was stuck in a hospital while he recovered from various injuries that had piled up from his plane crashes, and he was bored out of his mind. "The Little Mermaid" may have inspired Saint-Exupéry to write The Little Prince.Īlthough the true origin of the story is widely debated, one common theory is that Saint-Exupéry was inspired by this Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale. During an attempt to break the record for the fastest trip between Paris and Saigon, Saint-Exupéry crashed his plane in the desert 125 miles outside of Cairo. While today he’s largely remembered for The Little Prince, before World War II Saint-Exupéry was celebrated as an aristocratic aviator and writer who had flown mail routes in Africa and South America and even worked as a test pilot. When he depicted the novel’s narrator crashing in the Sahara at the opening of the book, Saint-Exupéry was writing what he knew.

The new governor of the colony, Sir William Phipps, arrived from England in the middle of May, and he seems to have been carried away by the excitement, and authorized judicial prosecutions. Once started, the alarm spread rapidly, and in a very short time a great number of people fell under suspicion, and many were thrown into prison on very frivolous grounds, supported, as such charges usually were, by very unworthy witnesses. In the spring of 1692 an alarm of witchcraft was raised in the family of the minister of Salem, and some black servants were charged with the supposed crime. The scene of this affair was the puritanical colony of New England, since better known as Massachusetts, the colonists of which appear to have carried with them, in an exaggerated form, the superstitious feelings with regard to witchcraft which then prevailed in the mother country. It was a delusion, moreover, to which men of learning and piety lent themselves, and thus became the means of increasing it. The two very rare works reprinted in the present volume, written by two of the most celebrated of the early American divines, relate to one of the most extraordinary cases of popular delusion that modern times have witnessed. Being an Account of the Tryals of Several Witches LatelyĮxecuted in New-England, to which is added A Farther Account Meanwhile, there was a revolution in the way goods were manufactured: cottage industry was upended by a trend towards workers serving as unskilled cogs laboring in the pre-cursor of the assembly line, hammering the same nail or gluing the same piece-as an 11-year-old Dickens had to do-hour after hour, day after day. Workers were leaving the countryside to crowd into new manufacturing centers and cities. The population of England had grown 64% between Dickens’ birth in 1812 and the year of the child labor report. This new, brutal reality of child labor was the result of revolutionary changes in British society. Dickens wrote to one of the government investigators that the descriptions left him “stricken.” These were not exceptional stories, but ordinary. He read of 8-year-old children who dragged coal carts through tiny subterranean passages over a standard 11-hour workday. Dickens read the testimony of girls who sewed dresses for the expanding market of middle class consumers they regularly worked 16 hours a day, six days a week, rooming-like Martha Cratchit-above the factory floor. Having people not like you is a risk you have to take to be real, and I’ll take that over being fake any day. – That I don’t always get along with everyone. – Falling in love with the idea of a person, instead of the actual person. So many moms and teenage daughters don’t get along–we just have to realize it’s nothing personal on either side. – All those times I scrawled “I HATE MY MOM” in my journal. After her rise and fall from early childhood stardom, barely eking her way through high school, a brief stint as a Hooters waitress, going through thick and thin with her mom/manager, and resurrecting her acting career as Santana Lopez on Glee, Naya emerged from these experiences with some key life lessons: Whether it’s with love and dating, career and ambition, friends, or gossip, Naya inspires us to follow our own destiny and step over–or plod through–all the crap along the way. In fact, according to the Natural History Museum in London, “Any element in your body that is heavier than iron has travelled through at least one supernova.” A mosaic image of the Crab Nebula, a six-light-year-wide expanding remnant of a star’s supernova explosion. Stars - the most noticeable and fundamental building blocks of galaxies - make up 97% of our bodies. But I recently learned something about stars that makes their sparkle a little more personal. Those twinkling lights in the sky are a constant reminder of the vastness of the universe. My parents even put stickers of shooting stars and the moon on my ceiling to watch as I fell asleep every night. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve appreciated the beauty of starlight. There’s a lot of unrest going on in the kingdom, though the princess is isolated from that. She and the princess, who has an impossibly long name, and Elsenna mostly just refers to her as “the princess” anyway, shared an entirely inappropriate kiss, and that’s when Elsenna got herself reassigned. She’s the Vice-Captain of the despotic king’s guard, quite a rise in the ranks from two years ago when she was the princess’s bodyguard. The novella is told from Elsenna’s first person POV. While that’s not a trope I usually seek out, The Unbroken reminded me of how much fun it is (and how much pining there is) when done right. I’ve read a few of Skye Kilean’s books and enjoyed all of them, so of course I had to read her sapphic scifi romance princess/bodyguard book. |
